People live in various conditions, which influence the food they eat. People in :

- in colder countries : need to eat more fatty products and food which give them a lot of energy. That is important for people who do physical labour.

- in hot countries : need to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, to give their body enough energy and liquids.

People should eat 5 times a day. No everybody eat regularly. Meals, which people should give are:

Breakfast snack lunch snack dinner (supper)

If every person give every meal of day depends on eating habits. Eating habits are influenced by our work, lifestyle, economic situation, current feelings(súčastné cítenie).

  1. BREAKFAST – it is first meal of day and it is eaten shortly after getting up. Many people ignore breakfast, but I think that it is the most important part of day. A bowl of fresh fruit salad will provide a slow release(pomalé uvolnovanie) of energy and dose of vitamins and minerals(dáv-ku). Scrambled eggs on toast (praženica) supply(dodáva) a dose of protein that goes towards building up your muscles(svaly). Well breakfast is good for your brain, especially children brain. If the child stomach is empty, they can’t concentrate on lessons in school. The children’s brain needs ideal level of blood sugar. Children who have breakfast properly generally have better reaction times and their brain is better problem-solving exercises.
  2. SNACK – it is meal between breakfast and lunch. Usually children give theirs snack to school, or they buy something in school snack bar. Usually I take my snack from home, and it is roll with ham or cheese, some fruit and some chocolate bar. Some people eat for snack sandwich or yoghurt.
  3. LUNCH – in Slovakia it is more important meal of day, but in Britain they prefer dinner like main part of eating habits. Slovak lunch include soup and main food. I adore for lunch vegetable soup and some meat. I eat every kind of meats, include beef, pork, poultry… I am not vegetarian.

I can´t usually choose how meal I will eat, because I eat every day in week in school canteen. I think that there cook well, but sometimes not. I don’t like every kind of sauces (omáčky), and milk soups. But when cook my mum, I eat everything, because she should be offend(nahnevať sa). But I like my mum’s cuisine. She cook typical Slovak cuisine majority.

  1. SNACK – it is meal between lunch and dinner. It should be something small – savory or finger food (jednohupka), for example fruit, or vegetable salad, some cakes, or buns…
  2. DINNER – is eaten in evening. Some people, mainly women, following by diet, so they don’t eat in the evening anything or they don’t eat only after six o’clock. But I think that dinner we shouldn’t skip. It should be something light, no bacon, roast and smoked meats (pečené a údené) because you can have a bad dreams.

We can distinguish between: ready-made food and homemade food.

  1. READY-MADE FOOD (=convenience food) - it is food buy in store and it is easy to prepare. FE tinned or frozen food(konzervované a mrazené). This style of eating prefer mainly people living on their own, in small flat. This food you have to just heat up (ohriať) in microwave oven.Ready-made food is convenient also in work, when you don’t eat in canteen, fast food place or restaurant. Employee take their snack or lunch with them FE sandwich or instant soup which is very quickly prepared. A: quickly prepare, cheapest; DA: you don’t know, what it consists
  2. HOMEMADE FOOD – is cooked in home usually by women. The Slovak housewives (gazdin-ky) spend a lot of time cooking because they think that homemade food is better than ready-made food from stores, because it tastes fresher. A: you know exactly what products you use for prepare, fresher, taste better; DA: take a lot of time to prepare this food in own kitchen, many dirty dishes (riady). I prefer homemade food, because I think that it is healthier.

Because some people are vegetarians?

Vegetarians – are people who don´t eat meat or fish. They eat only foods such as vegetable, grains(zrná), fruit and eggs, and they think, that they will be healthier, or they don´t like the cruel treatment(zaobchádzanie) of animals. I think that vegetarians have less vitamins, because the meat consists proteins(bielkoviny) which human need. And it seems to me, that vegetarians are paler (bledší) in the face.(=more white skin on the face)

Who are vegans?

Vegans – are people, who don´t eat meat, fish, and any animal products at all. FE: eggs, cheese, milk. Many doctors believe that this type of diet for a human should be dangerous and I agree.

Kitchen – room, where we can cook, and prepare many kinds of food.

Cuisine – way of cooking with special features of every country.

CUISINE - Every country has some kind of special traditional meal.

  1. a) BRITISH CUISINE – For British typically food are considered fish and chips. F&CH are usually wrapped in paper(zabalené do) and eaten outside. British people prefer to buy F&CH in shop than cook at home, because in shop it is quickly and very cheap. Typical English breakfast: bacon + eggs, fried sausages, toast with butter + marmalade. British usually drink strong tea with milk; whisky. Brunch – combination of breakfast and lunch together. It use to be typical at the weekend, when people get up later.
  2. b) SLOVAK CUISINE – is influenced by Hungarian, Austrian and German cuisine. Slovak food is base(založené) on many different kinds of soups, gruel(kaša), boiled and stewed vegetable (vare-ná a dusená), roast and smoked meats(pečené a údené) and dairy products. Slovak specialist inclu-

de salty and sweet dishes made with flour, FE: dumplings(buchty, knedle), bryndzové halušky – small potato dumplings mixed with sheep cheese. In Slovakia is popular beer brewing, mainly from small local breweries, which can be found across the country. We are known as wine growers (pestovatelia) too. Grape-growing and winemaking have historically importance(maju historický význam). Today there are three main wine regions in Slovakia: on the Hungarian plain(nížine); region between BA and Trnava – Záhorie; and the eastern Tokay region near Hungarian border (hranica). Typical Slovaks drinks are: special spirits(destiláty) like Slivovica – it is the most popular a plum brandy(=slivovica), next juniper brandy – called Borovička (has a taste similar to that of dry gin)

  1. c) GERMAN CUISINE – is famous for snitzel and beer
  2. d) HUNGARIAN CUISINE – is famous for goulash and typical nipping salami (štiplavá)
